Click here for this day's Bible readings.
Things have changed a lot. Everything is instant and fast paced. It's difficult to slow down, spend some time in silence and pray. The world tells us that our worth is measured in what we "do" and not who we really are, discouraging us to even look at God.
Still, even if we are able to slow down, temptation looms everywhere we look. Pictures and ideas that were scandalous before are scattered all around. Movies, music and TV shows all promote a life of instant gratification and without responsibility. The internet makes everything accessible, which unfortunately also includes the bad stuff.
Fast paced and temptation filled... The way things are right now, life can be really stressful and Jesus' words just seem empty. It's hard to live the life He asks, and you might be asking yourself, “Is Jesus alright? Does He know what He’s talking about?" You wonder if He knew what He was saying when He said His burden is light.
But before we continue to pull ourselves down, let’s not forget the line that came before that, “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest... take my yoke and learn from me.” The words "come to me" are the key words.
Moses shows the way that Jesus speaks of. A few days before, we heard Moses complaining and making excuses that he’s not the man for "mission redemption". Of course, God rebuked him and assured him that he will not be alone. He will be with God. Read today’s first reading and see how God meant His words.
How does Moses show the way? He trusted God and abandoned himself to God’s embrace, ignoring all the worries that he initially had. Do you think what he accomplished was easy? I don’t think so. But I am certain that Moses found strength in God to make it all light. He let go of the worries and just did what was asked. It was not his job to worry, as it is not ours today.
Having a "heavy life" with the world? Let go and let God.
