12 Days with St. Rose of Lima - Day 12 - Taking Rose as a Spiritual Friend

Spiritual question: Rose, now that I know you, will you teach me to love Jesus as you did?

Eleven sessions ago, Rose of Lima was essentially a name.

Today I don't want to give you another lesson about her.

Today we change the relationship.

Until now:

Rose has been the subject.

From today:

Rose becomes a companion.

Not your Savior.

Not the center of your spirituality.

Not someone standing between you and Christ.

Rather, a sister in the Communion of Saints who has already completed the journey you are making and can now pray for you as you make it.

Today, therefore, is not graduation.

It is introduction.

"St. Rose, I think I understand you now. Help me follow Christ."

First, remember who Rose is not

Before beginning devotion, we should establish something thoroughly Catholic.

There is an infinite difference between:

Jesus Christ

and

St. Rose of Lima.

Jesus is the eternal Son of God.

Rose is a creature.

Jesus saves.

Rose was saved.

Jesus is the source of grace.

Rose received grace.

Jesus is the mediator of the New Covenant.

Rose participates in His Body.

Jesus is worshipped.

Rose is venerated.

Jesus is Lord.

Rose is our sister.

So devotion to Rose should never terminate in Rose.

The direction should always be:

Rose → Christ → Father, in the Holy Spirit.

If knowing Rose makes you love Jesus more, your devotion is working.

And where does Mary fit?

Rose herself was deeply Marian. Even her religious name, Rosa de Santa María, expressed that relationship.

Mary occupies a unique place among the saints because she is the Mother of God and the supreme human model of discipleship.

Rose does not compete with Mary.

And neither competes with Christ.

Think instead of a family.

Christ is Lord.

Mary is Mother.

Rose is sister.

And all belong within the one Communion created by Christ.

Now look at how far Rose has taken us

I want you to see the whole journey once.

DayRose taught usThe deeper invitation
1 — DesireChrist is worth everything. What do I truly desire?
2 — DetachmentCreated things must not become gods. What possesses me?
3 — LoveJesus loved first.Can I receive His love?
4 — IdentityMy worth comes from God.Who tells me who I am?
5 — CrossSuffering can become communion. Can I meet Christ here too?
6 — FreedomDesires need not rule me.Am I free enough to love?
7 — PrayerRemain with God.Can I simply be with Him?
8 — CharityChrist waits in my neighbor.Whom have I stopped seeing?
9 — FidelityRemain when consolation disappears.Do I want God or God's gifts?
10 — TruthContemplation must become mission. What truth must I live?
11 — SurrenderChrist wants the whole person.Which door remains locked?
12 — CommunionWe do not walk alone. Will I let a saint accompany me?

Look carefully at that table.

There is something remarkable about it.

Very little of it ultimately concerns roses, miracles, visions, or extraordinary penances.

It concerns:

Jesus.

That means we have probably found the real Rose.

What was Rose's secret?

After everything we've learned, I would reduce Rose's spirituality to one sentence:

Jesus Christ became so real to Rose that everything else had to find its proper place around Him.

Beauty had to find its place.

Food had to find its place.

Comfort had to find its place.

Marriage had to find its place.

Family expectations had to find their place.

Suffering had to find its place.

Work had to find its place.

The poor had to find their place.

Rose herself had to find her place.

And in the center:

Christ.

This is why simply copying Rose's penances misses the point.

Rose isn't asking you primarily:

"Will you suffer like me?"

She is asking:

"Will you let Jesus become this real to you?"

That is much more demanding.

Your Personal Rule of Rose

Yesterday we began constructing it.

Today I want to simplify it.

A rule of life fails if it becomes so complicated that maintaining the rule replaces loving God.

So your Rule of Rose will have only five commitments.

I. REMAIN

Every day: The Rose Ten

Ten minutes of undistracted presence with God.

Same place when possible.

Before the Blessed Sacrament when possible; otherwise before a crucifix or sacred image.

Begin:

Jesus, I am here.

Then remain.

If prayer is beautiful:

remain.

If prayer is dry:

remain.

If distracted:

return.

If tired:

remain as reasonably able.

The goal is not ten perfect minutes.

The goal is:

relationship through fidelity.

II. SURRENDER

Every day: One small "no"

Not necessarily food.

Simply refuse one unnecessary appetite.

Sometimes:

no phone.

no unnecessary snack.

no gossip.

no last word.

no unnecessary purchase.

no self-promotion.

no complaint.

Then say:

Jesus, I am free because I belong to You.

Don't make this severe.

Make it faithful.

Rose's extreme asceticism becomes your ordinary freedom.

III. LOVE

Every day: One hidden act

Do one thing for someone without seeking recognition.

Nobody needs to know.

Help.

Listen.

Clean.

Give.

Encourage.

Forgive.

Pray.

Carry someone's burden.

Then:

Jesus, this is for You.

This may become one of the most Rose-like practices in your life.

IV. OFFER

Whenever suffering appears

Don't seek it.

Don't romanticize it.

Change what prudence and justice require you to change.

But when suffering remains:

Jesus, I unite this to Your Cross.

Do not let it make me bitter.

Make it fruitful in love.

I offer it especially for ________.

Now the Cross becomes intercession.

V. RETURN

This is the most important rule.

When you fail:

Return.

Don't spend three days feeling spiritually disappointed in yourself.

If you fall into sin:

repent.

If grave sin is involved:

Confession before receiving Communion.

If you skip prayer:

pray tomorrow.

If you break your discipline:

begin again.

If you become selfish:

return to charity.

If you become distracted:

return to Christ.

Rose's radicalism should make you persistent, not scrupulous.

Your spiritual life isn't a streak.

It is a relationship.

Five words

This means you can remember your entire Rule of Rose without carrying a notebook:

REMAIN.
SURRENDER.
LOVE.
OFFER.
RETURN.

Those five words contain much of what we have learned.

PRAY — Your first deliberate act of devotion

Today, if possible, do this before the Blessed Sacrament.

If not, use your Rose corner.

Place a crucifix before you.

If you have an image of Rose, you may place it nearby—but position the crucifix more prominently.

That physical arrangement itself teaches good theology.

Christ at the center.

Rose nearby.

Begin with the Sign of the Cross.

Then spend several minutes simply with Jesus.

Afterward, pray this slowly.

Prayer of Spiritual Friendship with St. Rose

Lord Jesus Christ,

You called Rose of Lima
and taught her to desire You above everything.

You loved her first,
and she spent her life learning how to answer that love.

Everything beautiful in Rose came from Your grace.

I thank You for giving her to Your Church.

Today I ask that St. Rose become a particular friend
and intercessor in my journey toward You.

St. Rose of Lima,

you sought Jesus when He consoled you
and remained with Him when He seemed silent.

Teach me to remain.

You struggled to become free
from anything that could possess your heart.

Teach me to surrender.

You encountered Christ in prayer
and then served Him in those who suffered.

Teach me to love.

You looked upon the Crucified Christ
and refused to allow suffering to separate you from Him.

Teach me to offer.

And when weakness, distraction or sin causes me to wander,

teach me to return.

Rose, do not draw my attention toward yourself.

Draw my attention toward Jesus.

When I become attached,
point me toward Jesus.

When I become proud,
point me toward Jesus.

When I become discouraged,
point me toward Jesus.

When prayer becomes dry,
point me toward Jesus.

When suffering comes,
point me toward Jesus.

When I encounter someone in need,
help me recognize Jesus.

When I succeed,
remind me that everything is grace.

When I fail,
remind me to return.

Pray that I may become the person
God created me to become.

And when my earthly life is finished,
pray that I may join you and all the saints
in seeing the One whom you loved
face to face.

Jesus, I belong to You.

Teach me to live like it.

Amen.

Then remain silent.

Don't immediately move on.

Now say something in your own words

This matters.

Don't let devotion consist entirely of prayers written by other people—including me.

Speak to Rose naturally.

Something as simple as:

"Rose, I didn't know you twelve days ago.

I think I understand you better now.

Please pray for me.

Help me become free enough to give Jesus everything.

And when I forget what this journey was about, point me back to Him."

That is enough.

Friendship doesn't require elaborate language.

Your final Rose Journal — Entry 12

Return to what you wrote during these days.

Then answer only three questions.

1. Who is Rose to me now?

Don't write a biography.

Write personally.

2. What has Rose revealed about my relationship with Jesus?

This is the most important question of the entire twelve days.

3. What is the one thing I believe God is asking me to change?

Not five.

One.

Because devotion becomes real when something changes.

And now I want you to make one decision

Choose one practice from these twelve days that will survive after the program.

My strongest recommendation is:

Keep the Rose Ten.

Ten minutes.

Every day.

Not necessarily studying Rose.

Actually, usually don't study Rose during it.

Spend it with Jesus.

That would be an extraordinarily fitting fruit of devotion to her.

Imagine that six months from now you barely remember some of the historical facts I taught you...

but because of Rose you have spent ten quiet minutes with Christ almost every day.

Then Rose has done her job.

One more thing before we finish

There is a temptation at the end of a spiritual program to think:

I need another program.

Not yet.

You have accumulated enough ideas.

Now we need practice.

Remember what Rose's Dominican tradition teaches:

contemplata aliis tradere

Give what you have contemplated.

So we will not immediately replace these twelve days with another twelve lectures.

Instead, the next stage should be different.

The next stage: Nine Days With Rose

On Day 1, I promised you a nine-day apprenticeship.

Now you're ready.

It will not primarily teach you more facts about Rose.

Each day will emphasize one lived practice.

DayApprenticeshipPractice
1DesireChoose Christ deliberately
2SilenceCreate interior space
3DetachmentSurrender one attachment
4HiddennessPerform secret charity
5The CrossOffer unavoidable suffering
6The PoorEncounter Christ in another
7FidelityPray without seeking consolation
8IntercessionCarry another person before God
9BelongingRenew your surrender to Christ

And there will be one important difference.

The twelve days we've just completed were approximately:

70% formation / 30% practice.

The nine-day apprenticeship will reverse it:

20% formation / 80% prayer and practice.

Because you don't need primarily to learn more about Rose now.

You need to start living what she has taught you.

For today, however, don't begin it yet

Today simply finish Day 12.

Do the Rose Ten.

Pray the prayer above.

Write your three journal answers.

Then live your day.

And sometime before sleeping, say only:

St. Rose of Lima, pray for me.

Jesus, I belong to You.

Teach me to live like it.

And stop.

No analysis.

No additional reading.

No searching for mystical experiences.

Just begin living the friendship.

Because twelve days ago you asked to move beyond knowing what St. Rose did, toward a devotion that could lead you into a deeper relationship with God.

That means eventually St. Rose must become less the object of our conversation and more a companion pointing beyond herself.

Toward the Crucifix.

Toward the Eucharist.

Toward the person who needs you.

Toward silence.

Toward surrender.

Toward Christ.

That is where Rose has been pointing all along.

And that is where we go next.
